This week’s meeting focused on courage and intentionality as we gathered around the theme “The Courage to Lead”. The evening reminded us that leadership is as much about guiding others as it is about knowing when to give them space.

Our Toastmaster of the Day, Nadya, invited us to reflect on a recent horseback riding experience from a visit to Grand Teton National Park. We explored how a wrangler impressively leads horses by guiding them while also letting them be once in a while, giving them the space to make their own decisions. We were encouraged to apply this balance of guidance and freedom to our own leadership journeys.

The Word of the Day was: 

Dauntless (adjective) — showing fearlessness and determination

Our first speaker, Janet, delivered a reflective and heartfelt speech titled “The Art of Imperfection”. She explored the challenge of carving out one’s own path against conventional expectations, sharing her personal story of being a rebel by choosing to move to the States and earning a degree in Fine Arts. A key takeaway from her speech was to confidently embrace our own paths, reminding us to live fearlessly and embrace imperfection.

Our second speaker, Nacho, presented a humorous speech titled “Help me become a Mob Boss”. Through a bold opening question asking the audience for $10,000 and the creative use of many props, he examined why we need to be persuasive and the value of masterfully commanding a room. His reflections challenged us to consider how effectively we communicate our own requests to the world, leaving many of us thinking long after the speech ended.

Our third speaker, Srikant, presented a nostalgic show-and-tell speech titled “The Best Views Come After the Hardest Climbs“. Through a presentation filled with pictures, he examined the journey of growth across different stages of life. His reflections challenged us to consider the formative places, education, and memories that shape our current lives, leaving many of us feeling deeply connected to his story.

The Table Topics portion of the meeting, led by Dawn, brought energy, laughter, and enthusiastic connection to the room. Guided by questions aligned with “The Courage to Lead” theme, members reflected on personal stories of fearlessness and leadership, resulting in a rare and exciting moment where every single person in the room volunteered to answer.

The evening left us with the insight that being a leader requires us to be dauntless in our pursuits, yet gentle enough to give those we lead the room to grow.
