Meeting – Own Your Story

May 6, 2026

This week’s meeting focused on ownership, resilience, courage, and connection as we gathered around the theme “Own Your Story.”

Our Toastmaster of the Day, Nitin, invited us to reflect on what it means to own our complete story. Through their remarks, we explored how the good parts of our lives often exist because of the difficult parts, and we were encouraged to embrace not only our accomplishments, but also our mistakes, challenges, and growth.

The Word of the Day was:

resilient (adjective) — able to overcome, adapt, and grow despite setbacks

Our first speaker, Bernard, delivered a humorous and imaginative speech titled “My Magical Front Porch.” He explored the mystery of disappearing packages through a wild and entertaining story involving a GPS tracker, a dumpster, and a family of talking raccoons. A key takeaway from his speech was that humor can help us process uncertainty, change, and even job loss, reminding us to stay creative and resilient when life takes unexpected turns.

Our second speaker, Sarah, presented a thoughtful and engaging speech titled “Facing Fears.” Through her experience with acrobatics and Toastmasters, she examined the parallels between facing a fear of heights and facing a fear of public speaking. Her reflections challenged us to consider how we can make fear more manageable by progressing incrementally, creating safety, and getting comfortable with failure, leaving many of us thinking about how courage is built one step at a time.

Our third speaker, Akila, delivered a warm and reflective speech titled “Hello, Is This Seat Taken?” She explored the power of small talk and how one simple conversation on her first day of college led to a meaningful friendship that lasted for years. A key takeaway from her speech was that we do not need to be impressive to connect with others; we simply need to be curious, present, and willing to say hello.

The Table Topics portion of the meeting, led by Nadya, brought reflection, laughter, and connection to the room. Guided by questions aligned with the meeting theme, members reflected on owning their stories, facing fears, building resilience, and finding courage in everyday moments.

Thank you to our functionaries and evaluators, including our grammarian, ah-counter, timer, and speech evaluators, for their thoughtful feedback and support in helping our speakers and meeting grow.

Our growth comes not from hiding the messy parts of our story, but from owning them with honesty, resilience, and courage.

See you at our next meeting!
