This week’s meeting focused on authenticity, courage, and impact as we gathered around the theme “Speaking Authentically.” The evening reminded us that this club is more than a place to practice speeches — it is a space where vulnerability is welcomed, stories matter, and growth happens in community .
Our Toastmaster of the Day, Nitin, invited us to reflect on what it truly means to be authentic. Through a powerful metaphor of the “non-stick pan,” we explored how polishing our words, thoughts, and even beliefs to please others can distance us from our real selves. We were encouraged to show up as our raw, genuine selves and to see Toastmasters as a safe haven for honest expression . The invitation was both simple and powerful: be bona fide — be real.
The Word of the Day was:
bonafide (adjective) — real, genuine, authentic
Our first speaker, Andrea, delivered a reflective speech titled “Finding My Path: My Journey in Discovering Social Work.” She explored her nonlinear career journey, from corporate accounting to pursuing her MSW, sharing the courage it took to leave a grueling job that impacted her mental health and follow a calling aligned with service and advocacy. A key takeaway was the reminder that no two paths look the same, and that trusting the process — even through twists and turns — can lead us to meaningful impact.
Our second speaker, Gopi, presented a thought-provoking International Speech centered on the message that “small change can lead to big impact.” Through vivid storytelling — from an expensive airport coffee to supporting a school in South Africa — he examined how we often overestimate the resources required to make a difference . His reflections challenged us to consider what small, immediate action we can take today rather than waiting for the “perfect” moment or scale.
The Table Topics portion of the meeting, led by Derick, brought laughter and playful creativity to the room through an interactive spin on a card game format . Members stepped into spontaneous scenarios filled with green flags and red flags, practicing quick thinking while staying aligned with the evening’s theme of authenticity.
Thank you to our functionaries and evaluators, Ignacio and Audrey, for their thoughtful feedback and support in helping our speakers and meeting grow.
As we move forward, we carry with us a powerful reminder: authenticity does not require perfection — it requires courage. When we show up as our bonafide selves and take small, intentional actions, we create ripple effects far beyond what we can see.
See you at our next meeting!
