Meeting – Common Sense

November 5, 2025

This week’s meeting celebrated communication, leadership, and laughter, blending common sense and creativity in true Women L.E.A.D. style! Our Toastmaster of the Day, Karen, introduced the engaging theme: Common Sense (vs. Nonsense). With humor and storytelling, she reminded us that nonsense often stems not from foolishness, but from lack of understanding, sharing a funny tale about her son’s “parachute adventure” with a Walgreens bag. The message was clear: sometimes, what seems like nonsense just needs a little more knowledge and empathy.

The word of the day was:

Bumbuzzle (v.) – to confuse or fluster.
Members were challenged to use this whimsical word throughout the evening without getting too bumbuzzled themselves.

We had a special new member induction, where Sarah, VP of Membership, officially welcomed Derek to the Women L.E.A.D. family. Mentor Akila pledged to guide him through his Toastmasters journey. When asked a creative icebreaker question, “If you were an article of clothing, what would you be and why?” Derek chose glasses, saying they represent clarity and how he wants to be perceived by the world.

The first prepared speech came from Lily, who presented “I Am a Chameleon.” In this insightful talk, she explored her communication style, a blend of supportive and initiating, and shared how she adapts her approach to connect with different audiences. Whether working with researchers or organizing a family dinner, she illustrated that effective communication means understanding both people and context. Her message resonated with all:
“Switching between communication styles doesn’t make you inauthentic, it shows awareness of your audience and purpose.”

The second prepared speech was delivered by Dawn, titled “The Ups and Downs of Maverick Leadership.” Dawn shared how being a maverick means leading with both freedom and courage. From her early days in the military to her current leadership journey, she encouraged everyone to embrace their unique leadership style even when it challenges norms. “Don’t be afraid to lead,” she said. “Even when it feels like it limits your freedom, leadership helps you grow into your power.”

Special thanks to our Table Topics Master, Eduardo, for asking common sense themed questions to our guests and to our evaluators, Ignacio and Audrey!

See you at our next meeting!
