Meeting – Transitions

September 3, 2025

This week’s meeting, guided by Toastmaster Akila, explored the theme “Transitions.” Akila reminded us that transitions come in many forms; they can feel uncertain, but they also bring opportunity, renewal, and strength. Throughout the meeting, speakers and participants reflected on how transitions shape our lives and how we can approach them with resilience.

The meeting began with a special moment, the induction of two members, Marianne and Anushree. Marianne shared how the club’s welcoming culture and creative workshops set Women L.E.A.D. apart. She especially appreciated the way Zoom participants are included, even through thoughtful touches like shifting camera angles to make remote members feel present in the room. Anushree, a seasoned Toastmaster returning after leadership roles at the division level, expressed that it was the people and the supportive spirit of the club that drew her back.

For the leader profile, Andrea introduced us to Amelia Earhart, the aviation pioneer who broke barriers and redefined what was possible for women. Earhart’s story of courage and resilience reminded us that transitions in life, whether a career shift or a personal leap, are best met with action. Her words, “The most effective way to do it is to do it,” became a rallying point for the evening.

Our featured speech was Dawn’s exploration of self-empowerment. She defined it simply as: “Does your life work for you?” Dawn offered three ways to cultivate empowerment:

  1. Evaluate your life honestly, recognizing what isn’t working.
  2. Ask for help, because true strength includes seeking support.
  3. Empower others, since sharing perspective and honoring choice strengthens community.

The evening’s Table Topics, led by Sarah, focused on practicing transition words to smooth communication. Members tackled questions on healthy habits and even debated the pros and cons of budget airlines, skillfully incorporating transitions like “additionally,” “similarly,” and “in conclusion.” The exercise showed how small linguistic choices can make our speeches more polished and persuasive.

See you at our next meeting!
