Meeting – World Mosquito Day

August 20, 2025

This week’s meeting, guided by Toastmaster Jagan, explored the theme “World Mosquito Day.” Jagan reminded us that even though malaria is not the global threat it once was, small things like mosquitoes can still make a big difference. He drew connections between the tiny annoyances of life and the deeper lessons they often bring, encouraging us to pay attention to the little things that shape our journeys.

For the leader profile, Dawn introduced us to Maria Sibylla Merian, a 17th century naturalist and illustrator who changed scientific understanding by documenting the life cycle of insects. Dawn also highlighted the way Merian’s contributions and those of the Indigenous and African people who helped her were often erased. Her story served as a call to remember the voices history has too often overlooked.

Our featured speech was Tiffany’s inspiring icebreaker, “My Sister’s Words That I Live By.” Tiffany spoke about growing up in the shadow of her high achieving older sister and the doubts that came with constant comparison. Yet, her sister’s advice “Don’t reject yourself before others reject you” became a turning point in her life. With that encouragement, Tiffany pursued opportunities she once thought were out of reach, excelling in graduate school, winning hackathons, and completing internships in tech. Today, she works in medical device research and development, helping improve lives around the world. Her story reminded us how belief in ourselves can open doors we never imagined.

Table Topics led by Chandana, built around the mosquito theme, brought out lively reflections. Members considered whether World Mosquito Day should still be observed and drew parallels between everyday frustrations and meaningful life lessons. The discussion revealed how even the smallest moments can lead to valuable insights.

We wrapped up the evening with a renewed appreciation for the little things, from a mosquito to a kind word, that can leave a lasting impact. See you at our next meeting!
