Meeting – Nonviolent Communication Workshop

July 23, 2025

We hosted a special Nonviolent Communication workshop this week, expertly guided by Eric Huang. Eric combined his experiences as an engineer, soccer coach, and passionate advocate of compassionate communication to lead an engaging and insightful session.

Eric introduced the core principles of NVC – self-compassion, compassion, and honesty – using interactive exercises inspired by his coaching background. He shared personal stories emphasizing the transformative power of shifting communication from obligation to genuine autonomy and choice, highlighting his own evolving relationship with his father as an example.

Participants learned about distinguishing abstract needs (such as peace or autonomy) from concrete strategies. Through interactive pair exercises, everyone practiced the art of saying “Yes” and “No,” becoming mindful of their emotional and physical responses. Eric underscored that setting compassionate boundaries through saying “No” is essential to authentic communication and self-care.

Members shared powerful personal reflections, and shared experiences of initial discomfort in setting boundaries but recognized the resulting clarity and peace that came from honoring their own needs.

Eric introduced “Empathy Buddies,” an exercise designed to practice deep listening and empathetic feedback. Practical tips included using responses like “Thank you, I just want empathy” to gracefully manage unsolicited advice.

Key learnings included recognizing and honoring personal needs to foster deeper authenticity, strengthening relationships through compassionate boundaries, and regularly practicing empathy to profoundly enrich communication.

See you at our next meeting!

Thank you to member Risa for helping take notes for this workshop!
