There are some walks of life in which a single human being actually affects the lives of millions of people. Sometimes, it’s an event and not a human who brings in that kind of impact. There is a subtle cradle-of-civilization like profession which focusses on such people and events with a noble purpose of making the entire population aware of them.
They are the most challenged messengers. Anyone wants to guess the profession?
This profession is JOURNALISM. In my opinion, a person who unravels secrets hidden behind secrets – is a good journalist. I want to talk about one such noble messenger known for her grit, integrity and sticking to the truth.
CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR.
She was born to Iranian Father & British Mother in England just before JFK was the President here, in year 1958.
She was raised in Iran till age 11, then she studied in England. In 1979, her family, who were pro-Shah, had to give up everything and flee Iran back to England when the Iranian revolution toppled the Shah. This experience sparked the fire in Christian to take up Journalism giving America a new student, giving CNN an amazing International Anchor and the world a person who covered the world.
Amanpour started her career as an entry level assistant on CNN’s international assignment desk in 1983. Through her 41 years as a Journalist, she became CNN’s Chief international correspondent and ABC’s global affairs anchor. A title is only as much worth as the work shown. Amanpour got herself and her questions in front of two rulers/kings of Jordan, Iranian president, Palestinian leader Yaseer Arafat, Egyptian president Mubarak, Libyan leader Gadhafi…. the list goes on. The special memo about her timing and interviews is – she is mostly either the first or last person to interview them after/before a milestone incident like coming to power or resigning or death. She covered fall of communism in west Germany when soviet union fell apart, iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, genocide in bosnia in the 90s, tsunami in Indonesia in 2004, situation of HIV infected kids in Africa, etc. In the very sensitive times that followed 9-11, Amanpour was the first person to interview British prime minister, French president and Pakistani President. That was her grit and reach in her world of journalism. The count of just the major recognized awards she won is 24.
If we are not still impressed, here is a closure for that – her annual pay is …… $5 Million a year.
